Guernsey Tomorrow Second Phase Underway

Some 30 people took part in a workshop at La Villette Hotel [on 19 May], which involved thinking about the main issues identified in the first stage of the process, and looking at the competing requirements for the use of space on the island.

Delegates used an island map to see how their particular ideas would fit in with other land planning issues. Each group also agreed their favoured options for meeting known requirements for additional housing and a wastewater treatment site.

Lead officer David Twigg, the States Strategic Planning Officer, said:
‘There was real engagement with the process at the workshop. This second stage involves much deeper thought about reconciling the island’s priorities with competing demands for land and it tended to stimulate considerable debate, to put it mildly.

‘A third of those involved hadn’t taken part in the first round, but it seemed that all got something from the event and enjoyed the experience.

‘We certainly found it helpful and we are looking forward to the next few events taking place over the next couple of weeks.’

The second stage of the process will conclude with a meeting for States Members and an open meeting for the public.

Note To Editors

More than 600 people took part in 13 workshops during phase one. All the results from the first round’s workshop events are available on the website. Second round workshop results will be published soon.

A consultation document will be issued later this year and a preferred strategy presented to the States to make a final decision during 2010.
