GUERNSEY TOMORROW SUMMARY REPORT SETS SCENE FOR STATES

Strategic Land Planning Group - 28 July 2010

A summary report of the ground-breaking public involvement initiative known as 'Guernsey Tomorrow' has been published. The 'Guernsey Tomorrow' initiative was designed to give people a say about the sort of place they would like Guernsey to be.

Almost one thousand people, covering a broad range of ages and personal interests were actively engaged in a series of hands on activities between the end of 2008 and the end of 2009. The results from all of the interactive workshops and drop-in sessions were posted on the 'Guernsey Tomorrow' website. These results have provided a clear insight into people's perceptions about the challenges and opportunities facing the island and how the island might develop and change in response to those issues.

The summary report is being made available to the people that took part in the 'Guernsey Tomorrow' process and, on request, to anyone else who may be interested. The report is being published as a prelude to the September States meeting when Deputies will have an opportunity to consider a States Report setting out broad options for the future land planning of the island. The options in the report have been developed to encompass the wide range of views, opinions and ideas that were contributed by people through the 'Guernsey Tomorrow' initiative. The options describe different ways that the island could accommodate its development requirements over the next 5 to 20 years.

SLPG Chair, Deputy Bernard Flouquet explained:'Guernsey's politicians have taken a back seat throughout the process in order to get people involved who would not ordinarily have a say about the future direction for land planning in the island. The next steps will provide the States with an opportunity to fully debate the options that have been informed by the public through Guernsey Tomorrow'.

Deputy Flouquet continued: 'After the initial States debate at the end of September, we will be working closely with all the Deputies to develop a preferred option in greater detail. The Strategic Land Planning Group will then prepare a new Strategic Land Use Plan for further States debate and approval early in 2011. It is that new strategic plan which will then provide guidance to the Environment Department for the replacement of the Urban Area and Rural Area Plans'.

Deputy Flouquet added:'I personally wish to thank all those people that gave their time to take part in the Guernsey Tomorrow initiative'.
